An instructor is highly influential in promoting aviation, and is the front line for promoting safe piloting in a complex and rapidly changing industry. Achieving your Certified Flight Instructor ratings means you have demonstrated a level of flying ability and knowledge such that you are now qualified to teach others and be paid for it. Many career pilots use Flight Instruction as a great way to build time flying while getting paid.

There are three primary categories of Certified Flight Instructor, each requiring different criteria:

 

• Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)

• Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument (CFII)

• Multi Engine Instructor (MEI)

Eligibility Requirements for Instructors Rating

 

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language

• Commercial Pilot certificate with an instrument rating or Airline Transport Pilot certificate

• Aircraft category and class rating appropriate to the instructor rating

• At least 15 hours pilot in command experience in the appropriate aircraft

• Training applicable to the flight instructor rating being sought

• A logbook endorsement from an instructor
